Borneo / Sabah Day 5th - 8th of may

Our Jungle Trip on Borneo

We departured early 7 am - pretty terrible time, but leaves us with a complete day to make up our mind what we'll do on Malaysia's part of the island. The south belongs to Indonesia. The most interesting area is Sabah - east to Brunai.

Starting from KL, we didn't book the flight to the north of Sabah like most travellers do, but directly near to the Oran-Utan sanctuarity in East Sabah, to Sandakan. The place near the airport is Sepilok, where is a whole area of jungle reserved for the human-like apes.

Airasia did well, and after a 3h flight, we arrived and suprisingly being picked up by a driver from the jungle resort, right next to the sanctuarity. We had email contact, haven't confirmed anything, strangely enough - but we hooked up with him and wanted to give it a chance. Arriving at the place, we didn't like the artificial expirirence we got from this place.

A small phone-call later to our second email contact option, I got someone from the famous uncle-tan organisation confirming to give us a lift right next to the Orag-utang center. Unfortunatly, we didn't make it in time to the sanctuarity, but we should have plenty of chance to see this awesome creatures later in their natural environment.

As malayians are always late, we didn't worry (like the two polish ppl waiting there) and enjoyed to been carried by a truck with our two backpacks to the Uncle Tan HQ. The deal is like that: you pay 160RM (35EUR) per pax for a 2nights / 3days visit to their camp right in the middle of nowwhere in the jungle. Food, accomodation, transport and 5 tours included. Wow! We've read about ppl raving bout Uncle Tan in the net and the LP, but it was also mentioned that it's pretty tough.

The HQ was full of other backpackers, and we started chatting with the guys coming from there and the ones joined our tour - muddy, basic, wet, hot - a jungle tour. The new guys have made up a good mixture with us, a New Zealander, australian couple (still on travel with us), Italian, Brit and the two polands. The guys were ideal, w/o too many details, we had lots of fun, not knowing names, only personal interests, character, country and the places they visited already.

All of us jumped to a minibus, for 1 1/2 hours heading south direction to Sukao. From there, it took us another hour with the boat on the Kinabatangang (the longest river on borneo with > 500km) to the jetty. As it was flood, we didn't drop off here but directly at the camp. The pictures will follow, but by words you can imagine, it was the most basic you may have seen in some of the films with John Rambo.

While there was already a group of 6 ppls from the day before, we weren't quite sure what hapens next, but the guys from Uncle Tan really organised the whole thing trhu. Right before we felt confused, they showed us the accomodation, the briefing for the tours, the box with ice and drinks, the 'lobby' and how to seperate your garbage. Also: watch out your stuff, especially food, as the machaca (long tail monkeys) take any chance to swing by and rip you off :)

While we were checking the shower and the toilets (muddy water and holes in a wodden box), it was still pretty clean and organised - plenty of water around to flush and keep yourself as clean as possible. But as the lucky star is with us, we had the chance to hear and follow the sounds of the most precious creature in the borneo jungle right next to us: the Orang-Utans. The NewZealand found the male first, way up high in the trees, grabbing some food - we took some steps deeper into the jungle, and right 10m above our heads, a small child and her momi did the same. It was such an enjoyment to watch them in the free nature, all of us had the pure excitement in our eyes and gasping for cameras (following).
As it was said, the crew sees them sometimes once in a week, or even a month - and the ppl before us missed them again being on a tour.

On Borneo and whole Malaysia, Palm Oil and it's export eliminated almost all rainforrest by a mono-culture of palm-trees. The area we've been is one of the protected ones, secured by the WWF and the governement. Now, as it's almost too late, a couple of free living Orang-Utangs, Elephants, only very few Rhinos are living in these reservats. Still, the Palm-tree plantage owners (you can drive hours in a mini bus and see only these trees) shot these creatures as they sometimes got irritated and need to get through the palm-tree areas, heading for the next tiny piece of jungle. Last week, a 36 year old Orang-utang male and 2 elephants were found killed, even being protected by the government laws.

Our tour in the afternoon was splendid - we've seen many animals of the wildlife, all to list now would make the first day log too long - and let me also tell you from our first night in the jungle in our next entry.

Kuala Lumpur / Hoffi's wedding

It's big-city time - and one hour before the wedding treck starts from the lobby, which gives us only few time to put an update here.

We've checked in to the Holiday Villa Hotel in Subang, in the west of Kuala Lumpur (commonly 'KL'). A troup of european friends came by to visit the marriage of Torsten Hoffmann, one of my dear friends from wallstreet:online times.

As Ksenia and I departured from Langkawi in late night day before yesterday, and with intention brought nothing of smart clothings with us, the visit in one of the gigantic shopping malls was scheduled for yesterday.
Unfortunatly, we haven't picked the upper class mall KLCC in the petronas towers, but the Mega Mall before. It has not the high density of western boutiques, which made it difficult for us to find appropriate suites and accessoires. Caused us 7 hours of our life to get all together what we need, and not extremly cheaper then in germany. I bough my whole dress in Zara for men... missing out the Boss and Armani Shop in the KLCC :(

This was pretty tiring - for the evening a socialising get-together with the family and the travelling friends was scheduled in the Pedang Cafe, up there in KLCC. Had some descent traditional malayian food, followed by a reserved area in KL's famous party location. We used the time to get to know each other, and even that the clubbing environment and people have been very interestting, noone of us stayed too long or beeing pissed- to be ready for the wedding today.

The plan is to visit the marriage at 1 - followed by a gala, then continuing in the president suite ina smaller group. Let's see what w can report back from that later :)

LangKawi / Malaysia Chillfactor: high

Today is our last day on Malaysia's leasure-island Langkawi, located in the north-west of the country.
Our friends departured earlier in the morning to Kuala-Lumpur, whereby our plane via Airasia leaves at 8pm. Apparently, now we have some time to log down our expirience.

On the first day, Thomas and I rented some scooters - for the convenient price of 30rm (7 EUR) per day, you'll get your hands on an almost new 125ccm scooter, ideally to discover the island. Gasoline costs nothing either - and the traffic is not very heavy, streets are fine and not dirty.
Our Sunbeach Resort is located on the southern west, and fortunatly Thomas was able to reserve us a romantic suite, very nice accomodation! So we used the private beach, warm water of the bengal bay and the first fresh fish with plenty of Tiger Beer for dinner.

On the second day, Christian and Arne rented their bikes as well, and the six of us got on the first longer ride, discovered the seven lakes, some waterfalls and had a exclusive lunch at one of the 5*+ Resorts in the north. Afterwards Thomas brought us to a hidden lagune on the further north.

After return, the girls had some hot-stone SPA at a beautiful place we discovered - meanwhile the 4 guys of us got some money on the table for Poker, followed by a fantastic dinner right next to the sunset beach.

As rain season is about to start in a month, we had sporadic rain, and in the second night a frightening thunderstorm. It kept raining till 11am, so we started for our mountain tour the next day with a bit of a delay. We had the chance to get up there right before the first clouds, I'll ost some pictures later on.

In the night, all of us booked into the SPA again, lots of massage, creams, jacuzzi and relaxing. The Sunba right next to it had live music, happy cocktail hour and some locals kicked our ass in pool - damnit.

Now whilst the four other folks are already in KL for shopping, Ksenia and I enjoy another day here on Langkawi - a beautiful island, quiet for now as season is in Nov / Dec, lots of activities to see and interesting to discover by yourself. We may see us again here.

Almost there / 28th, 29th and night of 30th

Alrighty - the worst thing about travelling in south-east Asia is to get there. I hate economy-class, especially if you need to sit there for 7 and 12 hours.

However, we picked emirates, and the onboard entertaiment is as great as promised. From DUS to Dubai, we had 2 single seats in an Airbus 330-200. Not noisy, descent food and good choice of films - it's a bit more tight room for your legs then in a Lufthansa plane.

From Dubai - we almost missed the plane, as it was announced as Singapour all the time. But nowwhere on our bookings with emirates they mentioned a stop-over there. So we barely made it to enter the plan as almost last ones - to find out a 1 1/2 hours delay on taxi due to heavy air-traffic.

Every seat had a great VOD system, with hundreds of movies, TV shows, radios and (Multiplayer-) Games embedded into your front seat. The machine was a new 777, the LCD clear and sharp. I watched Deja-vue, The fontain, A night at the museum and several Scrubs, Simpsons and Friends Shows.

The side rows have three seats each - fortunatly the japanese guy next to me disappeared after start until departure.

Experienced asian service at Thai airways last year, the personell at Emirates needs some training. The staff has not payed enough attention, we rang the service bell several times for drinks and no reaction at all. There was no smile and an overall rough and stressed atmosphere at the service people - and doing 4 rounds of service in 11 hours flight is just not sufficient. I'd suggest to go and let their service managers fly sometimes with Malaysian ihr Thai-Airlines - see what good service in economy can happen with trained service (and lots of booz!)

So we did the stop-over in SIN for 1 1/2 hours, departured in KUL finally on monday 12:00 am. Bit of a kerfuffel to get the hotel send over some shuttle at 1:00 am, but we made it - at 2, we layed in bed, showered and partially happy - looking forward to 4 hours sleep to get to our next station the next day.

Over KLCC terminal (the low-cost one for Airasia), we have booked a flight to Langkawi until thursday. We're about to meet Thomas, his GF and Arne in Sunset resort. Plans are to get some scooter, shopping as it's a tax-free district, beach, sun and possibly get crowded by local tourists. 1st may is a public holiday as in germany - labor day. 2nd too - but something different Which I can't remember. So it may happen we got some company there - but totally don't mind. PLenty of chance to get to the quieter areas later. So I packed my bottle of schnaps and let's get prepared for our summer holidays - in Malaysia 2007!!

Malaysia 2007

Tonight we fly to South-Eastern Asia again. Starting the trip from DUS over Dubai to Kuala Lumpur. From there, we'll get to the northern situated Island Langkawi for a couple of days beach and chilling, meeting my friends Thomas and Arne.

Thursday back to KL for the marriage of my friend Torsten - we'll have plenty of days with party, shopping and big-city-sightseeing.

From there, we'll leave on the 8th to Borneo / Sabah to Sandakan. Checking out some jungle, orang-utangs and bit sight-seeing. On 11th, we're heading to Asias probably most beautiful Diving spots near Sipadan. We'll have 6N/7D on these Water-Bungalows and have some underwater expirience.

Afterwards heading back to borneo, then KL again for picking up the shopping stuff and 21th back to germany.

Well - that sounds like a plan :)
